We only ever see these beautiful Scandinavian visitors when there is snow on the ground.

Given that they only visit the garden briefly while there is snow on the ground, it’s amazing how aggressive and territorial they become. There always seem to be one or two individuals that spend most of their time chasing other fieldfares, blackbirds, robins, sparrows and even a poor wren away from  the area of the garden they’ve staked a claim on.

We spent most of the day photographing them, putting out fruit for them and repeatedly breaking the ice on the pond to give them access to fresh water.
